HEAR NORTHWEST 2019 Cancelled-please read below

The OHS Board has made the decision to cancel our Hear Northwest 2019 event in Newport.
The decision was made because we simply do not have the member participation necessary to organize and run the event this year.
It was a hard decision, but one that had to be made nevertheless.

We are going in a new direction as an organization. We realize our profession is going through major changes, and we must envision a new way forward.
We need your voices and energy to revitalize our Society, and to protect and strengthen our profession.
In January, several members along with IHS representatives gave testimony to the Advisory Council on Hearing Aids voicing strong opposition to the new Rules on tinnitus which quietly was passed in 2018. This new Rule mandates that Hearing Aid Specialists refer patients with tinnitus to a physician, and places restrictions on Hearing Aid Specialists' authority to activate and adjust tinnitus maskers in hearing aids.

WE NEED YOU TO GET INVOLVED NOW!!
Please join us with IHS in our effort to revise or rescind this rule, which would negatively impact individuals with hearing loss and tinnitus.
We know that ours is the only state where this kind of rule has passed, and it cannot stand!
Please consider getting involved with this effort by joining our Society, and IHS. Write a letter-IHS will assist you with the language.
The Board welcomes you to join us to form a new mission, a new focus and direction for the future of our profession.
Please join us on July 20th 9-12 at the Holiday Inn in Salem. RSVP me if you can come. WE NEED YOU!
Thank-you,
Lorraine Henriques, OHS Board President

Hear Northwest 2019 cancelled

Dear OHS Members:

As you may know, since 2015 the Oregon Hearing Aid Advisory Council had been considering a request to address tinnitus management in our hearing aid specialist regulations.  Oregon Hearing Society and International Hearing Society have been working closely together since that time to make our case to the Council about the appropriateness of hearing aid specialists performing limited tinnitus management.  I’ve attached a copy of the IHS letter sent in 2016, which will provide you an overview of the issue at hand.

I am disappointed to report that the Council on June 15, 2018, upon advice from the council attorney, finalized a regulation that limits hearing aid specialists’ rights to assist patients who have been diagnosed with tinnitus, and make independent decisions about using the tinnitus masking feature available in most of today’s modern hearing aids without the prior recommendation of a physician.  I have attached the FAQs released by the Council/Health Licensing Office, which provide a brief explanation of the application of the rule that went into effect July 1.  You can view the new rule here: https://secure.sos.state.or.us/oard/viewSingleRule.action?ruleVrsnRsn=246892 (see Section (11)).

I share this with you for two reasons:

  1. Oregon Hearing Society wants to make sure you are aware of the new regulations and make all necessary accommodations to comply with the new rule.
  2. We will need your help.

Oregon Hearing Society is working with International Hearing Society to explore all options to address this inappropriate rule, which will impede our clients’ access to care.  When the time comes and we issue our call to action, we need you to get involved.  I hope we can count on you.

With questions, please feel free to reach out to me.
